Health & Road Safety

Safe systems save lives. Cities can develop infrastructure and policies to eliminate traffic deaths by redesigning streets and public spaces, improving sustainable transport options, and focusing on vulnerable road users. Improved road safety encourages active lifestyles and reduces exposure to air pollution, resulting in health, environmental and economic benefits.

WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities has provided 32 cities in 12 countries with audits and inspections of over 1,000 kilometres of streets, including BRT corridors. Our street design guidance has helped to create more walkable, bikeable communities, and we have supported cities in launching Vision Zero Safe Systems plans. Our approach includes monitoring and evaluations of projects, and connecting transport to related societal issues like physical activity and air pollution.
